When you are put in this situation, you need those tips. I'm not saying it gives them reason to give you any less of a good service, but we all have our days, do we not?

I tip around 25%, no matter what, and even more around holidays.

I don't think this idea would be a good one though. I can see alot of people not going out to eat as much...
Why would you give a tip for non-existant/bad service? if a waiter or waitress is giving me attitude then they won't get a tip at all. I've worked in my parent's restaurant as a waiter since i was 15 on and off and if i gave crap service then i wouldn't expect anything.
It might be a stressful job but thee's no excuse for people being rude. Whereas slow service mgiht not be their fault if the restaurant is understaffed or the kitchen people are the ones messing up.
You get a tip for good service same as you get payment in any job for doing what is expected.
Tipping bad bad service encourages it as people think they don't need to bother. I somehow doubt if your mother wasn't a waitress that you'd ahve this guilt complex which makes you tip all the time/excessively.

We're lucky in the UK. Minimum wage applies to all jobs (excepting those that manage to get around it with attendance bonuses etc) including waiting tables. Tipping isn't exactly required although you will find places with service charges built in.

I tip if I get great service, I won't tip if I get mediocre service or 'ok' service as that is what they are paid to do.

Yeah, if they do this, I'll just stop tipping (barring superb service). Any dirty looks and I'll say "You're already getting 20% automatically, so we're good, here."

It's harsh, but if I'm FORCED to tip 20%, I won't be giving them anymore.

"It's right there on the check, your 20%."

ALWAYS leave a tip.

Tip for a good waiter/waitress: 15%-20%

Tip for a bad waiter/waitress: Here's your tip: Lose the $%&$ing attitude! (usually written on a napkin)

Tipping in general makes me angry. Especially when I decide not to tip when I am paying for the meal and my friend adds the tip (true story). Waiting staff should be paid a fair wage by their employer and that should be built into the price for the meal. By tipping you endorse the practise of employers not paying staff properly and expecting them to make it up in tips (although I understand feeling sorry for them). I will occasionally leave a tip if the service was good but not by any sort of %. Eating out at overpriced restaurants is enough on your part to create the job of waiter in the first place. Why doesn't the cook get tipped? Why don't you just tip everyone you come into contact with? Do the restaurants tip the poor farm workers who harvested that food? Tipping makes me sick. Stop this system of underpaying staff and expecting them to make up for it in tips. I would happily pay a tip for very good service even if I knew the waiter was getting a fair wage. If I knew they were getting underpaid I would feel sorry for them and probably pay a tip. Why don't you use the tip money and spend it on food for someone poorer than the waiter - like the hobo outside the restaurant asking for food. Buy them food but don't give them cash (or they might spend it on drugs).

If you have seen the film called "Waiting" you know never to piss off a waiter/waitress.

alright i just wanted to say this since it kind of goes with the subject of tipping

My part-time job is working at a safe & locksmithing shop. Part of my job is to deliver the safes. Now keep in mind, the average safe we have to move is about 800-1000 pounds. Also keep in mind that we do have the effin bastard safes that could weigh over 4000 pounds.

Now, we get paid properly, but it's still hard work, and depending on where we deliver the safe to, we could be going up stairs, down stairs, across a yard, carpet, etc.

Generally good customers realize that this is a tough job, and tip when we do extrordinary service, like we go in there, survey where we are going to take it, and get it done fast and effeciently. Generally we also get tips for rush delivery jobs where we HAVE to deliver on THE DAY they buy it.

Now this is a much tougher job than waiting tables, and the tips reflect on that, but the principle in the same, you do an outstanding job, you get a bonus for that extra effort you put into it.

And tipping poorly is your only safe method of pissing off a waiter/waitress.

I can agree with that. Just as long as its not mandatory and waiters etc don't get mad if you don't tip them.

Disclaimer: I have waited on tables and done deliveries and have enjoyed tips :P

I went to a restraunt yesterday with my friend. After we ate i left a 3 dollar tip since the service was good and im a poor college student. I went up and paid with my debt card and the guy up front asked me if i wanted to tip again. What the heck is this world coming too?

OMG maybe he wasn't paying attention. Many restaurants I have been to the waiters have perfected the art of being able to turn through 180 degrees without looking at a single patron or in their general direction to see if they need anything. They never get tips. On the occasions I do give tips I give it in cash so the restaurant owner doesn't steal it since it's electronically deposited straight into their account.

The resturant owner can't steal the server's tips. Each server keeps copies of all of the credit card receipts, with the tip amount on them. At the end of the night they add up all of their tips, so they can report them for tax purposes.

That being said, most servers prefer getting cash tips because it is very easy to skim a little off the top before they report their tips for the night.

I always try to leave 20% unless the person was outrageously rude or just did a horrible job. Alot of people don't realize that servers in the US only make around $2.50 an hour, and live almost entirely off their tips.
